With the most wins (14) in UFC bantamweight history, Aljamain Sterling's rise to the top is something to admire. However, there are doubters following a two-fight series against Petr Yan, where he won the UFC bantamweight title via DQ and then retained it on a split decision. "Funk Master" now seeks to silence his critics when he defends the championship against Sean O’Malley at UFC 292 on August 19.

The fight takes place at the TD Garden in Boston and airs on ESPN+ PPV in the U.S.

O’Malley was noticed after an impressive win on Dana White’s Contender Series. “Sugar” has 11 wins via knockout including a third-round TKO of Kris Moutinho in an infamously one-sided bout. He was awarded a questionable split decision win over Yan to secure a title shot. Now, he must prove he is worthy of facing the champion.

While he has skills, Sterling believes he needs just one opportunity to take O’Malley down.

"Sean will be a good striking test, but he makes one mistake, and he’ll be on his back,” Sterling said on social media. “GnP TKO, round 2! I’ve seen it play out hundreds of times now. Almost time to execute the vision.”

Since the two fights with Yan, Sterling has defended the belt against T.J. Dillashaw and Henry Cejudo. He recently called O’Malley out for direct messaging him on social media. The latter's not intimidated by Sterling as he looks to reach the top of the mountain.

“He has what I want, he has the belt -- it's as simple as that,” O’Malley said on The MMA Hour. “I just let him know, I said, ‘Hey champ, you look a little nervous,’ when I saw him on the TV. I was just being honest. He looked a little — this moment might get to him a little bit. What was that, 14, 13 days out from weigh-ins? I’m sure he still has a lot of weight to cut, he’s dealing with these injuries. So I just thought he looked a little nervous, I thought I’d let him know, and I did.”
